Sweet 15
The Quinceañera is a social ritual particularly relevant in contemporary Latin-American societies that reiterates and reinforces the standardization of binary identities of genre in the guise of a rite of passage for young girls.
“Sweet 15” resorts to a family fiction in order to juxtapose private and public spheres, foregrounding topical issues of gender politics and post-colonialism.
Mickael de Oliveira’s work tells of a wealthy family who adopt a young indigenous man. The adoption happened after a long process – during which the family searched for an organ donor compatible with one of the heiresses – and will culminate in an ominous débutant ball where the young man will be introduced to the Portuguese elite.
