It’s not over until the soprano dies

Many operas end badly. Many operas end in deaths. Many operas end up killing women – stabbing, burning, throwing themselves out of sickness, drowning, poisoning, of fear, or of unknown cause. “(…) the patriarchy makes sure that the women are marked out for special cruelty. Opera, and especially 19th century opera, allows dangerous women to coruscate thrillingly on the stage for a few short hours – then murders them.” (Charlotte Higgins). mala voadora recreates endings of operas in which female characters die, centering this recreation on those characters and the areas they sing.
