Hélio

Renan Martins’ newest creation – Hélio – is an ode to the life of Helio Martins de Souza, Brazilian ballroom dancer and maternal grandfather of the choreographer.

Working with the themes of authenticity, originality and appropriation, Renan Martins sets up the challenge to work with the 50 year old music piece Drumming, by American composer Steve Reich. As if in a inner expedition, he moves through a personal archive of folk, social and popular dances as he dialogues with his own experience as a dancer in Europe for the past 15 years.

Renan Martins is a Brazilian choreographer and performer. He graduated from SEAD and P.A.R.T.S. and has been a performer for Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, Daniel Linehan, Damaged Goods/Meg Stuart, amongst others. His first full length “Let Me Die In My Footsteps” joined Aerowaves top 20 works of 2016. He has been making work since then and performing in different venues in Europe and Brazil. This is the second time he is supported by O Espaço do Tempo, previously having worked on VIADUTO in 2019.
